The source of Beas river are Beas Rishi & Beas Kund , the Beas Rishi which is the austerity Place of Maharshi Beas is on the right of Rohtang Pass and the Beas Kund is to the South of Beas Rishi flows as separate streams and meet together at village Plachan another 10 Km North of Manali and forms the river Beas.

The ancient name of river Beas was " Arjiki " . According to an ancient history it said that there was enmity between Maharshi Vashishtha and Maharshi Vishwamitra, at one time Maharshi vishwamitra killed hundred sons of Maharshi vashishtha , so on this Maharshi vashishtha suffered a deep physical and mental pain and he tied himself with ropes and jumped into the river Arjiki. It is said that the river Arjiki got him out after removing the ropes, the place is known as village Vashisht. Since the river broken the ropes of Maharshi vashishtha and got him out of water it's named "Vipasha " means one who broken the ties (Bandhan)

So till Mahabharat -age the river was being called Vipasha. The Maharshi Ved Beas the great thinker and writer had mediation at the holy place and later on the river was named after his name river "Beas " .

The river flows through the world famous tourist place Manali which is situated on the right bank of Beas traverses through beautiful evergreen forests reaches Kullu.

Then the river Beas traverses through Aut, Pandoh, Mandi, Sandhol, Kanda -Pattan ,Sujanpur, Nadaun, Dehra - Gopipur, in district Kangra, Pong dam and finally merges in river Satluj at Harike -Pattan in Ferozpur district of Punjab before entering in Pakistan.

After flowing through Pakistan it finally merges in Arabian Sea.
The main tributaries of Beas in kullu district are the Paarvati, the spin, the Mala nahi nalla, the Solang nalla, the Manalsu, the Sukoon, the Phojal and the Sarvari which drain their runoff to Beas.

In district Mandi the feeders are Hansa, Tirthan, Bakhli, Jiuni at Pandoh, Suketi, Panddi, Son and Bather.
Further in district Kangra the main tributaries are Binwa, Neogal, Gaj, Banganga, Dehr, Chakki, Ku nahi, Maseh, Khairan and Man . The Beas enters Kangra at Sandhol and leaves near Mirthal.

The total length of this river is 470 km out of which about 270 km flows in Himachal Pradesh.There are hydro power projects at Pandoh, Pong dam and Harike on this river along with lakes. Some water has been diverted to Satluj river which falls into Satluj through Dehar power plant.
Harike is also developed as a tourism spot by Punjab Government through Asian Development Bank assistance.
