An Overview of Himachal Pradesh district Kullu Part - II ,Brief History of district Kullu  :-

History of district Kullu   can be studied  one documented history and secondly  Mythological history . Let us know about the documented history of Kullu in first phase . 

On first November 1966 The re organization of Punjab Act Was passed  by the Government of India and the hilly areas of Punjab were merged in Himachal Pradesh , thus Kangra , Hamirpur , Una and Kullu districts came into existence on 1st  November 1966.

As per historical references like inscriptions on the coins , references of travellers  the history of Kullu has been traced about 2000 years back .


As per speculations
 the word Kullu might have been derived from word " Kuluta "

The word Kuluta was found inscribed on the coin from the first century AD . On that coin the inscription   is  " Virayasa  , King of Kuluta ." The first Raja of Kuluta was Virayasa  .

The Chinese trevelar scholar Hiuen Tsang  is believed to have been described Kullu  as Kiu - lu- to  situated at 117 miles  to the North East of Jalandhar .


The track has also been referred toas " Kulantapitha , which translates to " the  territory which marks the end Kula which means the end of the habitable world .

According to the known history of Kullu  the kingdom of Kullu was founded in the first century AD by Raja Behangamani Pal who is speculated to hav come from Paryag  Alahabad .

The people of Kullu were under the regime of Thakurs of Spiti  at that period  Raja Behangamani Pal overthrew the regime of Thakurs and established his Kingdom in first century AD. Thus first ruling dynasty of Kullu .




Rajas of Pal dynasty ruled the Kullu till about 1450 AD and Raja Kelas Pal was the last in that line .

 An Overview of Himachal Pradesh district Kullu - Part I 





Kullu District  :-



Kullu is a very beautiful district of Himachal Pradesh  which shares it's boundaries with Rampur area of Shimla district in South ,  Lahaul and Spiti district in  to the North East and Kangra and Mandi districts in West .
The Kashmir valley , Kangra and Kullu valley is situated in Himachal division of Himalayas . It is also called Lesser Himalayas .

At one time Lahaul and Spiti were  separate Waziries of Kullu sub divisions and was a part of Kangra district of Punjab . Kullu was a tehsil of Kangra till 1962 and Lahaul and Spiti which was created a district in 1960 was also a part of district Kangra .

District Kullu came into existence on November 1st. 1966 as per Punjab Re organization Act 1966  .

Kullu valley is the largest valley in this mountainous district . The Kullu valley follows  the course of river Beas ranging  from an altitude of 833 metres above mean sea level at Aut and 3330 metres above mean sea level  at Atal Tunnel  South Portal below Rohtang pass .

The Kullu district headquarters is situated on the right side of the Beas river  . The tributaries of Beas are Parvati , Tirthan and Sainj rivers .

Tehsils of district Kullu :- 


District Kullu is having following Tehsils  :- 

1. Kullu .
2. Manali 
3.Banjar 
4. Anni 
5.Nirmand 
6.Bhuntar 

Nither , Sainj and Jari are sub Tehsils in the district .

The total area of district Kullu is 5503 square Kilometres .

Economy of the District :- 


The economy of Kullu district mainly based on Agriculture , Horticulture , Tourism and traditional handicrafts .

Tourism in this valley is the major activity throughout the year .

 An Overview of Himachal Pradesh district Kangra Part XVI , Tourist places in district Kangra Continued   :-  


One Another among beautiful tourist destinations  is Pong Dam reservoir named as Maharana Pratap Sagar ,. It one of the Ramsar wetland sites  in Himachal Pradesh other two are Chandra Taal in Lahul and Spiti and third one Renuka wetland Ramsar site in district Sirmaur .

It is winter home to Syberian  migratory birds . The migratory birds come here every year in lacs of count . Very beautiful site from tourism point of view .

The construction of Pong Dam on river Beas just up stream of Talwara in district Kangra, Himachal , which was started in 1960and completed in 1974 has resulted  a 42 Km long and 2 Km wide beautiful lake spreading from Pong dam to Dehra , declared as Ramsar conservation site on 19-08-2002 .

The lake has an area about 307.29 square Kilometres. The lake is also called Pong dam lake or Pong Lake. The lake is now named as Maharana Pratap Sagar on the name of great warrior Maharana Pratap. The lake was declared a sanctuary in 1983. The pong dam lake is a loving place for migratory waterbirds.

Pong dam wetlands are major habitat for migratory waterbirds. On the onset of winters, thousands of migratory waterbirds from central and North Asia start arriving at Pong dam lake for their annual sojourn. Annually more then one lac migratory waterbirds about 115  species are roosting and feeding in pong dam lake.

Red necked grebe is found only in Bharatpur in Rajasthan and Pong dam in India. Due to increase in numbers of birds , the pong dam lake has gained international importance.

In addition to the migratory waterbirds the sanctuary is supporting the fauna including mammals such as barking deer , sambhar, wild bear, fox, reptiles and nilgai etc. Some beautiful views are given below.

Above 440 metres from mean sea level in five Km radius of lake area about 20,000 hect. has been notified as buffer Zone. Unauthorized cultivation , cattle grazing and other unscientific activities around the lake is causing problems of silting in the lake.

Some salient feature are :- 

1. About 95 villages have been displaced and about 20,000 hect. of land was acquired for this project by Bhakra Beas Management Board. 

2. It is an earthen dam known as Beas Dam. The dam volume is 35,500,000 cubic metres. 

3. The catchment area of lake is 12561 square km. 

4. Capacity of Lake is 8570,000,000 cubic metres. 

5. Spillway capacity :- 12375 cubic metres per second. 

6. Surface area :- 240 square km in Normal. and 450 square km during floods. 

7. Surface elevation :- 436 metres from mean sea level. 

8. Height of Dam :- 133 metres. 

9. Max. Depth of water :-  97.84 metres.

Near Dehra and Gaj Kund moderate number of water birds can be observed, the scenic beauty of the entire area is very much charming for nature lovers, tourists and Environmental scientists. One must enjoy the nature here.
